Pre-Operative Instructions
Your physician may require certain lab reports prior to your surgery. If lab orders are required by your physician, please schedule an appointment with your primary care doctor. Additionally, many facilities will require a pre-operative appointment a few days prior to your surgery.
Do not take aspirin, aspirin products, ibuprofen or non-steroidal anti-inflammatories in the week prior to surgery. These may thin the blood and cause excessive bleeding. Various herbal and other over the counter medicines can have a similar effect. A complete listing of medications that should be considered is included below. If you are taking these medications, please stop one week prior to surgery. Do not resume these medications until 5 days after the surgery, unless approved by your physician. If you must take a pain medication, a non-aspirin product like Tylenol can be taken.
1-2 Days before surgery:
If you become ill prior to your surgery, please contact our office. If you need to cancel surgery please give as much notice as possible.
Stop Pseudoephedrine 2 days before surgery because it may increase heart rate.
You will receive a confirmation call from the surgical facility 1-2 days prior to surgery. They will provide you with the time of your surgery. In addition, please ask any questions that you may still have about the surgery. Generally arrive at the surgical facility 1-2 hours prior to the scheduled surgery time to fill out paperwork and to allow the facility personnel to prepare you for the surgery.
The Night Before Surgery
Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery, including water. The anesthesiologist will cancel the surgery if you have had anything to eat or drink during that time period. If you routinely take morning medications, bring them with you. The anesthesiologist may allow you to take this medication with a small amount of water.
The Day of Your Surgery If the child is under 1 year of age and on formula, they can not have formula 6 hours prior to surgery. If under 6 months of age, no formula 4 hours prior to surgery. If the child is breastfed, nothing is allowed for 4 hours prior to surgery.
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes for when you leave the facility.
Children are encouraged to bring their favorite toy or blanket and pajamas to wear home.
If you use an inhaler for asthma, bring it with you.
